On May 28, our company successfully completed, for the first time in China, a continuous tubing pressure-controlled retrieval operation using the “continuous tubing pre-installed speed tool string” at Well Tuhai Wenmi No. 1 of PetroChina.

On May 23, 2016, the second test well for our company’s independently developed and manufactured retrievable suspended device for coiled tubing was used in a production enhancement operation involving a slickline string at Well Wenmi No. 1 in the Tuha Oilfield. This operation was led by Zou Changhong, Project Manager of the Downhole Special Operations Team at the Tuha Oilfield, with on-site service provided by He Baowen from our company. After meticulous and well-organized work, the slickline-based production enhancement operation was successfully completed on the afternoon of May 24, 2016. Following nitrogen pressure testing and plugging, the tubing pressure rose to 10 MPa (compared to the original wellhead pressure of 5 MPa). On May 25, 2016, no pressure was detected inside the tubing. After careful analysis, it was suspected that the plug head of the retrievable packer had not been fully released. The special operations team conducted an analysis and decided to pull out the tubing to inspect whether the retrievable packer had malfunctioned. Before pulling out the tubing on May 28, we discovered gas leakage inside the tubing. Since the retrievable packer pre-installed at the front end of the coiled tubing has the function of resealing the tubing, after injecting a ball and pressurizing to 20 MPa, no further gas leakage was observed inside the tubing, confirming that the retrievable packer had successfully set and sealed. On May 29, we dismantled the wellhead, installed a wellhead connector, and pulled out the coiled tubing to examine the tools. We found that the screen plug head of the retrievable packer had been completely dislodged and settled at the bottom of the tubing. Meanwhile, both the tubing and the filter screen were clogged with layers of rust and sludge, and the coiled tubing itself contained approximately 100 meters of sludge. Analysis of the data revealed that this is an old well, over a decade in age, with relatively complex downhole conditions. Nevertheless, the retrievable packer successfully performed its sealing and setting functions under these challenging circumstances. The tool’s performance has received high praise and full recognition from the customer. Next steps will involve conducting relevant operational treatments within the well and running a second tubing string to further enhance production.

The successful retrieval of the pressurized tubing string represents a first-of-its-kind achievement in domestic oilfields. Previously, oilfields had been relying on imported equipment from abroad or resorting to well-killing methods to retrieve tubing strings. The success of this operation demonstrates that the leadership and technical staff of Baoji Saifu Company, based on market and process demands, have developed a new product with excellent and reliable performance, fully meeting the requirements of field operations.
